Foliar vs Granular Fertilizer!

Maintaining a lush and vibrant lawn requires proper care and nourishment. Two popular types of fertilizers used in home lawn care are granular and foliar fertilizers. While both aim to provide essential nutrients to your grass, they differ in application methods, nutrient delivery, and overall effectiveness. At Turf Appeal, we utilize both foliar fertilizer applications and granular fertilizer applications as part of our performance turf programs to give you a dense, healthy lawn you can enjoy all summer long. A common question we get is "What is the difference?" In this blog, we will explore the distinctions between granular and foliar fertilizers!

Granular Fertilizers

Granular fertilizers are solid, pellet-shaped nutrients that are applied directly to the soil. Here are some key characteristics of granular fertilizers:

a. Application: Granular fertilizers are spread evenly across the lawn using a spreader. This method allows for even distribution and can be easily calibrated to ensure accurate coverage.

b. Nutrient Delivery: Once applied, granular fertilizers need to be watered in for the nutrients to reach the root zone. The granules slowly release nutrients over time, providing a steady supply of nourishment to the grass.

c. Longevity: Granular fertilizers often provide a slow-release formula, gradually releasing nutrients over an extended period. This allows for consistent feeding and reduces the frequency of application.

d. Ease of Use: Granular fertilizers are relatively straightforward to apply, making them a convenient option for homeowners who prefer fewer applications and a more hands-off approach to lawn care.

Foliar Fertilizers

Foliar fertilizers, as the name suggests, are liquid solutions sprayed onto the grass leaves. Let's explore some notable aspects of foliar fertilizers:

a. Application: Foliar fertilizers are mixed with water and sprayed directly onto the lawn using a sprayer. This method allows for quick absorption through the leaves, bypassing the root system.

b. Nutrient Delivery: Foliar fertilizers are readily absorbed by the grass through the leaf surfaces, providing an immediate nutrient boost. This method is particularly effective for correcting nutrient deficiencies and addressing specific issues quickly.

c. Absorption Efficiency: Foliar fertilizers can be absorbed directly by the leaves, bypassing soil-related nutrient limitations. This makes them an excellent option for lawns with compacted soil, poor nutrient availability, or where soil amendments are challenging to implement.

d. Frequency: Due to their quick action and fast absorption, foliar fertilizers may require more frequent applications compared to granular fertilizers. However, they can be applied sparingly, targeting specific areas or periods when your lawn needs a nutrient boost.

How do we use it?

For customers that purchase a full summer fertility program from us, we apply a spring, summer and fall granular product with durations that range from 8 to 12 weeks. This allows us to establish a baseline of nutrients throughout the spring, summer and fall.  Once the baseline has been established, we utilize science via the foliar applications to push your lawn to its best with foliar fertilizer specifically designed for high performance turf.

The Start of 2023!

April 05 2023

Everyday now we continue to see the snow melting away, puddles seemingly everywhere, and feeling that nice warm sun on our faces.

At Turf Appeal we have been busy this winter, creating a website (www.turfappeal.ca), preparing new programs and services for the upcoming spring/summer fall season, and trying to stay warm!!

Now that we are entering spring, I find that a good way to start planning is with "Why is turf nutrition so important?" At Turf Appeal, we believe that a strong, well balanced turf nutrition program will obviously equate to a healthier, stronger, more vibrant lawn. Another benefit of turf nutrition is that your lawn will be better able to handle those environmental stresses that appear over the summer, such as drought, heat, excessive moisture, etc. A strong turf nutrition program can also force your turf to outcompete weed infestation, requiring less weed management on your part.

As you navigate our website, you will see that we have fertility packages available that we believe will help you create your best 'turf appeal'. We are also more than happy to work with you to create your own fertility or weed control program based on what you want to achieve this summer.

We continue to offer many other landscape services such as pruning, hedge trimming, seeding, over seeding, sodding, mowing, etc. Feel free to hit the 'Request a quote' button on the home page or the contact page so we can discuss further.

Regardless of what you choose to do, we hope that you are able to get outside and enjoy the benefits of a nice healthy lawn all summer long!
